Diethyl Carbamazine Citrate: It is the only drug available for filariasis and has a highly selective effect on microfilaria of W. Bancroft and B.malayi from peripheral blood in 7 days. Microfilaria & adult of Loa Loa & Microfilaria of Onchocerca volvulus are also susceptible. Chlorpheniramine Maleate: Histamine H1 Receptor Antagonist. It undergoes considerable first pass metabolism about 70% of the drug in the circulation is bound to plasma proteins and is widely distributed in the body. It is extensively metabolized. Unchanged drug and metabolites are excreted primarily in the urine. Children showed more rapid and extensive absorption, faster clearance and a shorter half life. The combination of Diethyl Carbamazine Citrate and Chlorpheniramine Maleate effectively treats Filariasis, tropical eosinophilia without causing allergic manifestations. |
